Diagnosis
Morgagni's Hernia
Radiologic Findings
Frontal and lateral chest radiographs show air-filled soft tissue opacity in the anterior right cardiophrenic angle. Omentum and transverse colon is seen in the right cardiophrenic angle on chest CT.
Brief Review
Hernias through the foramen of Morgagni can be encountered at any age. They are due to herniation of abdominal contents through the diaphragm between its costal and sternal attachments. The hernia noramllly develops in teh right anterior cardiophranic sulcus, presumable because the heart hinders herniation on the left. Morgagni hernias are normally small and often contain only liver and omentum, in which case they are of homogeneous soft tissue density on chest radiographs. The margins are smooth and rounded, and the primary differential diagnoses include pericardial cysts, prominent cardiac fat pads, and focal pleural or pulmonary parenchymal masses. When hernia contains bowel, usually transverse colon, the diagnosis is readily made based on chest radiographs.
